The name John Doe is used as a placeholder name for a male party, in a case, legal action or discussion, whose true identity is either must be withheld or unknown for legal reasons. Also, the name was used to refer to a hospital patient or male corpse whose identity is unknown. This practice is widely diffused in Canada and the United States, but is rare in other English speaking countries, including England itself, from where it probably originates.
