China’s fake Olympic fireworks

Written by wowo on Friday, August 15th, 2008 in Sports, Variety Info.

olympic 2008-fireworks

Like had been reported last week about this year’s Olympic broadcasting high-tech would be, we did not guessing that a Chinese press and media would uncover the fact that in the opening ceremonies some of the fireworks were actually CGI animation. A 29 footprint-shaped fireworks series really did “march” across Beijing last Friday night, but the audience of television only saw a few of them. Instead, if a helicopter had been following them across the sky filming them on a clear night, they watched 55 seconds of a rerecorded rendering of what the fireworks “would have looked like”

Indicated by NBC commentators, there was something “cinematic” about the fireworks, without saying and coming out that the audience in home might has well have been watching The Lord of the Ring’s Gandalf’s fireworks, since both sequences in similar ways were probably prepared. Without that commentary, in a “real” time, millions of people around the world watched this coverage.

We support and like CGI, though in a presentation narrated by news anchors not necessarily. After the truth of course, the fireworks footage came out, we learned that in the opening ceremonies was lip-syncing the voice of a less attractive little girl, by one of the cute little singers. Then soon we’ll probably discover that the Bird’s Nest stadium, which is impressive, being filmed on a sound stage in Taiwan and it is three feet high.

Why the faked firework footage matters, and why it doesn’t?
